Catfish will be coming under USDA inspection, if the final version of the farm bill becomes law. This will be the first seafood item legally inspected under the USDA's federal meat inspection program, and with this designation a host of changes may be expected-from making it impossible for imported catfish to be sold with a USDA label, to a marketing campaign directed at getting retailers to purchase only USDA labeled catfish. Other species of farmed fish and shellfish can voluntarily apply to come under the meat inspection program.
